Hi Jared, we are investigating this as a priority. Please can you confirm the following:

  • Are you using CCleaner Free/Pro/Business Edition?
  • Which antivirus/antimalware/antispyware tools do you have running?

H again Jared, I have a couple of follow-up quetions:

  1. Are you using Windows 7?

  2. Are you on Windows 32-bit or Windows 64-bit?

Thank you very much for the info Jared,

We have had problems before with Malwarebytes ‘Ransomware Protection’ module falsely flagging CCleaner.

Can you see if CCleaner will run after the following steps:

  1. Disable the Ransomware setting in MWB Premium
  2. Go to CCleaner.com and download CCleaner Free
  3. Run the installer files you just downloaded (be sure not to run any older file that you may have downloaded before)
  4. Install CCleaner
  5. Run CCleaner

Then, if that works, try the following steps:

  1. Re-enable MWB Ransomware Protection
  2. Run CCleaner

(When you are done with the test, you can re-enable the Ransomware Protection in MWB if you disabled it.)

Stephen
I understand the steps but I need some clarification before agreeing to try this experiement.

  1. Since you emphasized downloading a fresh file rather than using a previously downloaded 5.65 IS THERE A NEW ‘BETA’ FIX VERSION OF 5.65 YOU WANT ME TO TRY?
  2. I am using Malwarebytes v3.8.3 NOT the newer v4.x. I am on the Malwarebytes forum and am aware of the many reported problems that V4.x Ransomware module has with other software. I’m also aware that there are few if any such problems with v3.x. MWB V4 uses a new design with a new ‘engine’. Often user’s temp fix was to REVERT BACK TO V3.8.3 - problem resolved.
With that preamble my question is: Are you sure the problem is with MWB v3.8.3 flagging CCleaner 5.65 or just with MWB v4.x. FYI: I saw NO notifiction from MWB 3.8.3 that it blocked CCleaner opening.

The reason for such a long reply is that I am reluctant to try the experiement. As I said in my earlier post I reverted back v5.64 after a clean uninstall losing my CCleaner settings including cookie exceptions.
Morever, I’m in the middle of reinstalling some software as part of a urgent project.

Bottom Line: Don’t want to mess with having to set up CCleaner settings again if there’s no fix version and if the problem is only with MWB 4.x
(ie,low probability it’s the prob on my system)

Not irrevocably against trying but would have to delay until my project is completed. Awaiting your reply to my questions

  1. No there isn’t a new version of CCleaner, these steps revolve around the hypothesis that the MWB issues we’ve seen in the past are back. The reason for downloading a new version is that sometimes files download domains are falsely flagged for some period of time, and files downloaded before a certain date continue to be blocked due to ‘old’ (and incorrect) data.
  2. Thanks for the info re: versions of MWB and Ransomware module.

Given your info, I don’t think we need to pursue with these steps in your case. I’ll look into other lines of investigation.

We have identified the problem with Trend Micro and we are working with them towards a solution. It seems you are not running TM, so I am not sure what the cause is in this specific situation.

Archived? Does this mean you have abandoned attempts to fix this problem? I would hope NOT.

Attempted to use latest v5.69 [portable]. Same problem; will not open app.

Last working version 5.64. Have tried all your suggestions as well as some of my own – shutting down various antivirus apps and disabling 0Patch micropatches involving CCleaner components.

As I mentioned earlier, I’m guessing this problem has something to do with my specific Win7 Pro x64 installation.
